Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is in your candles?
A: 100% soy wax, cotton & paper braided wicks, and phthalate free fragrance oil.

Q: Do you use essential oils?
A: No.  I use fragrance oils that are phthalate free and do NOT require a Prop 65 warning.  That means the fragrance oils that I use are “better for you” fragrance oils than the average ones you might pick up at a store.

You can read more about the Prop 65 Warning here.

While I love essential oils, it takes a lot of essential oil to have any kind of fragrance in soy wax.  Essential oils are very pricey.  My goal with these candles is to craft a luxury grade candle with good ingredients at an affordable price point.  I simply cannot do that with essential oils.  That being said, the fragrance oils I use are a blend of both essential and fragrance oils, and they are the best (ingredient wise) on the market right now.  We are very ingredient conscious in our home, so I would never include an ingredient in my candles that I wouldn’t feel comfortable burning in my own home.

Q: What is the burn time on the candles?

A: The burn time is listed on each candle label, but here they are for easy reference:
8oz Jar Soy Candle — 40 hr burn time
10oz Apothecary Soy Candle — 35 hr burn time (this is due to the double wick)
16oz Apothecary Soy Candle — 60 hr burn time

Q: Is there a pick up option for candle orders?

A: Yes! If you’re local to Roanoke, VA you’re welcome to pick up your orders! There is a “pick up” option at checkout that you can select.

Q: Why did you start making candles?

A: I started making candles for two reasons…
1) In 2018 I had a 1 year old baby at home.  One day I was burning a candle from one of my (then) favorite name brand stores, and it was giving me a headache.  It dawned on me that if I was getting a headache from the candle, it may not be good to burn around my baby.  When I looked up information on what was in the candles I was burning in my home, I was disappointed with what I found.  I realized that most of my favorite candles weren’t great to burn around him, so I decided to dive into some deeper research about how to make candles with better ingredients.

2)  When I started looking for candles with better ingredients, I couldn’t find anything “just right”.  Soy wax can be finicky, and with so many of the soy candles I was buying, the hot throw (how strong the candle smells when burning) was lacking.  I wanted soy wax, but I also wanted to be able to smell my candle throughout the room or the house…not just while sitting next to it.  I’m also picky when it comes to fragrances, and I wanted specific scents that I couldn’t find. So, I decided to create my own candles! Candle making started off as a creative hobby and slowly turned into a business.  It took a lot of trial and error and two years to hone my craft, but in 2020 I started selling my candles! Shout out to my brother & sister in law for being the best candle testers of all time!

Q: Do you do custom orders?

A: Yes! I love working with clients on custom orders. I’ve had lots of custom orders over the years for wedding favors, bridal party gifts, and client gifts for both realtors and photographers. If you’re interested in a custom order, please email me at ashley@aroundashleystable.com for a quote!

Q: How long have you been making candles?

A: I’ve been making candles since 2018.  It took me a couple of years to hone my craft and get my candles to the quality I wanted them to be. I started selling them in 2020.

Q: Where do you get your supplies?

A: I get my supplies from a few different places, but that information is top secret! That being said, I like to direct people who are interested in trying their hand at candle making to candlescience.com.

Q: Where do you make the candles?

A: In my home!  When buying a candle from me you can know that it was made right here in my home with my own two hands.  I hand pour the candles in small batches in my kitchen.  It has worked great for years, but eventually I’d love to have a studio & workshop.
